MOON JELLY LAMP
MOON JELLY LAMP:
A PRESS ACTUATED OMNI-DIRECTIONAL DESK LAMP INSPIRED BY THE MOON JELLYFISH
TASK: To develop a battery powered lamp
INDUSTRIAL DESIGN CATEGORY: Product Design
SKILLS USED: Ideation, Sketching, Fusion 360, 3D printing
TIMELINE: 5 Weeks
Week 1-2 : Ideation and Research
Week 3-4 : Design Development
Week 5 : Final Product
MOODBOARD
The initial 3 themes I researched about and ideated for were: Fungi, Underwater and Skeletal Structures. After creating a couple of initial sketches per topic, I decided to finalize on the theme “Underwater” due to a personal fondness towards marine life as well as the large variety of organisms I could draw inspiration from.
SKETCHES
After making the mood board and selecting a theme, I started with ideating different lamps through sketching. By creating various lamps of differing shapes and sizes while drawing inspiration from the sea, I had a catalogue of ideas to start with. Finally, I decided to go with a lamp that looks like the bell of a jellyfish.
CAD MOCKUPS
ITERATION 1
ITERATION 2
ITERATION 3
After deciding on the idea, I began a CAD model, which went through 3 stages of refinement after considering aesthetics as well as manufacturing processes and materials.
MODELS
3D printing the pieces and vacuum forming the clear layers resulting in a pretty accurate to life model of the lamp I envisioned, however, I did not manage to make it work mechanically as intended.
